What Happens Now, After A Near Perfect Storm During Bush

Not sure, but there are many items in my hope chest. Today I pick the one I put squarely in number one position, knowing that events that can occur while I write this, can rearrange priorities immediately. Remember when American deaths in Iraq and fear of terrorist attacks on the homeland, were at the top of public concerns fairly recently?

Stabilize housing prices. Although lower prices truly do favor new buyers, not so if they continue lower. Prices are crucial because they are a persistent cause of loss of confidence almost everywhere, along with continued and resultant unmeasurable risk in all credit markets, so housing prices must be at the top of any economic list.

It seems pretty clear now to most of us, that we have come through a decade of out of control financial engineering by clever and motivated business men and women of all ethnicities, in the US and around the globe, by Democrats and Republicans alike if the truth were known, while regulators, lawmakers and almost every level of government, Democrats and Republicans alike if the truth were known (didn’t I just say that?) were asleep at the switch, or unable to to convince the establishment of the risks very clearly articulated by some, while these clear forecasts of financial disaster were met with denial by too many Democrats and Republicans. This theme is beginning to sound familiar to me, how about you?

Contributing to the now obvious impotence of those we entrusted to do the right thing, is an obviously antiquated regulatory system which encouraged and allowed “regulatory arbitrage” in the pursuit of unsustainable profits and growth in housing stock and prices, general asset price increases and nominal debt and other trading markets in general.

Regardless of anything I or anyone else says about the current financial catastrophe, an Obama administration must tackle that issue quickly and importantly in a way that really stabilizes home prices, preventing continued growth in foreclosures and importantly do it in a way that sunsets the governments conflicted position inherent in any sovereign government owning and managing too much capital which belongs in private hands including publicly traded stocks as well as privately  held companies.

The world will unfortunately, sooner or later, begin to see and experience the negative side of sovereign ownership or heavy handed control of operating businesses such as banks, oil companies or car companies and other industries like mining and manufacturing. So all the while avoiding my predictions of such problems, the Obama Administration et al must stabilize housing prices before our economy can begin to think in terms of new growth. And growth, a sometimes demeaned result and pursuit of capitalism, is important in a world with population growth and increasing expectations and desires of the growing ranks of worlds poor and as well as the growing middle and upper classes in economic terms. The American Dream, by the way, is wrapped around economic growth.

Income disparity in the US may already be eclipsed in many parts of the world while many current governments, as owners of vast amounts of capital stock, will make “corporate” decisions their population will sooner or later not approve of. Too much control, like any power, corrupts the holder of that power and lack of separation of business, government and for that matter, religion, will be the combustion of future tragedies.

So much of that power is in the hands of many who see the US as an entity to emulate in growth and to overtake, economically or militarily, when possible. That seems to be the way of the world, long before the US came on the scene and such ways would exist in the absense of the US, and many of us believe those undesireable ways would exist to an even greater degree in the absense of a strong America.

President Elect Obama: may the necessary wisdom be with you and those you appoint and delegate important decisions to. Start with housing prices, but do it quickly because there are aggressive issues not waiting patiently in the wings.

Political vs. Military Solutions to Terrorism

Both candidates on wrong trackThe war against international terrorism and its sponsors is a war unlike any we have ever known.

There is no battlefield, no clash of armies. It is a war fought in the shadows and recesses of the world. Terrorism breeds among the hopeless and the alienated, in societies where democracy and economic opportunity are out of reach for most people. Military power alone will not end this scourge of mankind. Victory will require extensive international cooperation in the intelligence, economic, diplomatic, law enforcement and humanitarian fields. It will require a seamless network of cooperation between America and her allies (Hagel, 2003).

In this article, I want to discuss how terrorist organizations have successfully employed a number of political strategies to gain popular support in their respective communities, and compare these efforts to the largely non-political strategies employed by the Bush administration in its attempts to counter terrorism. As we consider these points, I think it’s very important to keep in mind the positions of Senators Obama and McCain, and how they fit in relation to the existing order.

From September 14 to 17, 2001, Gallup surveyed individuals in 14 foreign countries on whether they thought that the United States should attack the country (or countries) serving as a base for the 9/11 terrorists … of those surveyed only Israel and India supported a military attack. This poll reflected both the unpopularity of the military approach to terrorism, as well as the prevailing conventional wisdom against it. President Bush’s argument that al-Qaeda hates “freedom … life … education … and health care” is seen for the oversimplification that it is:

It is nonsense to claim that Al Qaeda and its sympathizers have no morality and simply want to annihilate Western civilization … Even bin Laden has never preached destruction of Western culture or else, as he has taunted, “Why didn’t we attack Sweden?” At every turn, bin Laden has sought moral justification for Al Qaeda’s actions and demands (Atran, 2006:136).

There are two interpretations currently on offer in Iraq, that of Abu Musab al-Zarqawi[1] (who argued that Islam mandates terror), and that of Grand Aytollah Ali al-Sistani (who says Islam does no such thing and is compatible with democracy). If we are to believe President Bush, then the “terrorist parasites who threaten their countries and our own” are obviously of the first variety; and this is truly all we need to concern ourselves with.

After all, what does one do with parasites? One exterminates them. Parasites have no political cause for their circumstances, no justification for their actions, and no place among decent human beings. One does not need the consent or cooperation of the international community to do away with parasites, for they are worthless and meaningless. It’s not important to understand why they are terrorists, or what oppression or desperation has brought them to these particular crossroads, it’s sufficient that we simply blow them out of existence, along with any number of innocent civilians who happen to be in the vicinity (one is reminded of Elmer Fudd leaving mass destruction in his wake as he unsuccessfully attempts to blast Buggs Bunny).

Vice Admiral John Scott Redd, USN [retired] is very optimistic about the progress we’ve made, and the prospects for continued military success. Redd believes that the US is “better prepared today to fight the war on terror than at any time in out Nation’s history, and we are getting better everyday” (Committee on Foreign Relations, 2006:7).

On the other hand, Martha Crenshaw (2006:64) writes “that even the most extreme and unusual forms of political behavior can follow an internal, strategic logic … Terrorism can be considered a reasonable way of pursuing extreme interests in the political arena.” But the Bush administration refuses to consider this possibility, for this would afford those who employ terrorism as a political tactic a voice, a face, an identity beyond that of “terrorist.” Rather than consider that groups employing terrorism may have a legitimate grievance, the Bush administration has instead chosen to flatly and unconditionally denounce the “terrorists” and vow retaliation:

…we’re going to get them, no matter what it takes. This act will not stand; we will find those who did it; we will smoke them out of their holes; we will get them running and we’ll bring them to justice. We will not only deal with those who dare attack America, we will deal with those who harbor them and feed them and house them.

What the Bush administration is missing is the bigger picture. Far more than an engaging game of “whack-a- mole,” the United States government is facing a world-wide mutiny against the existing order. Western governments must recognize that the tiny proportion of the population that ends up in terrorist cells cannot exist without the availability of broader sources of active or passive sympathy, resources and support.

But how do terrorist groups obtain this support from the broader population? Given the offenses committed by the Bush administration, angering Muslims by the millions, the greatest challenge that remains is to unite the Muslim population against a common enemy. Scott Atran (2006:136, 143) offers an explanation of how this is accomplished:

The edited snippets and sound bites favored by today’s mass media have been used with consummate skill by jihadi leaders and ideologues, beginning with bin Laden himself. As a result, deeply local and historically nuanced interpretations of religious canon have been flattened and homogenized across the Muslim world and beyond, in ways that have nothing in particular to do with actual Islamic tradition but everything to do with a polar reaction to perceived injustice in the prevailing unipolar world…Historically and today, it is desecration of sacred places and perceived humiliation, even more than death and destruction, that has moved people to embrace violence.

“We are in a battle, and more than half of this battle is taking place in the battlefield of the media… [We] are in a media battle for the hearts and minds of our umma.”

- Ayman-al-Zawahiri, July 2005 (reprinted in Lynch, 2006:50).

Al-Qaeda is attempting to restructure the political identity of the entire Islamic population, primarily via the media. Much like any political campaign, al-Qaeda is targeting the “median voters of the Arab Muslim public.” While this target population may not be Islamist, because of their concern over American involvement in the Middle East and their fury over corrupt Arab governments, they are susceptible to Al-Qaeda’s anti-American message. While al-Qaeda has been utilizing the media all along, it invested in this tactic more heavily than ever after the American strikes against Afghanistan. Zawahiri strongly believes in the need to obtain wide support of the public. He uses American intervention in the region to turn popular support against America.

Jessica Stern (2004) quotes from Zawahiri’s autobiography, in which he refers to the “crusader” alliance and the “fundamentalist coalition” which opposes it, “It is anxious to seek retribution for the blood of the martyrs, the grief of the mothers, the deprivation of the orphans, the suffering of the detainees, and the sores of the tortured people throughout the land of Islam.” Stern cautions that the Bush administration is giving Zawahiri every media advantage he could dream of to muster support for al-Qaeda. Not only does Stern claim that the Bush administration’s approach to fighting the war on terror is immoral when she refers to “the heart-wounding images of American soldiers humiliating, torturing, and killing Iraqi prisoners,” she also suggests that it’s just not very smart:

If bin Laden were writing a script for George Bush and Tony Blair to follow, would he not command them to attack and occupy a Muslim country in defiance of the international community and in violation of international law? And would it not be his fondest wish to see the “new crusaders” humiliate those Muslims, and themselves, in the most graphic way possible? Having those soldiers photograph their crimes might have seemed too much to ask for.

Now consider Senator Obama. He’s on a world tour proclaiming his intention to continue the military war on terror, and to take it to the soil of one of America’s own allies. What is Senator McCain doing? He’s proclaiming the need to continue the military war on terrorism as well. How long will it be before either of these candidates has the United States in direct opposition to the greater Muslim world? Both candidates are blindly assisting the efforts to radicalize moderates against the United States. In this great political campaign, what we need is a candidate that understands that the hearts and minds of over a billion Muslim people hang in the balance; not between Obama and McCain, but between moderate and radical.

What we need is a candidate that can wage war where it can be won, at the negotiating table.

AMERICANS SUFFER WHILE CONGRESS AND CANDIDATES ARGUE

The gremlins are alignedALARMING PERFECT STORM SLAMS STOCK MARKET

Upon news of a “perfect” storm the DOW collapsed today dragged backward by record per barrel oil, threats of corporate tax increases and windfall profit taxes, new taxes on investors, opposition to increasing domestic oil production and $7 per gallon fuel costs that impact companies from General Motors to Blackberry and predicted declining sales and earnings. Countrywide announced it is cutting 7,500 jobs.

The GOP introduced a bill in Congress to increase domestic oil production including offshore drilling and dropping the oil shale moratorium, adding incentives for alternative fuel vehicles, restrain speculators and keep away from ANWR.

Barack Obama spoke platitudes about “setting goals for energy” as the stock market collapsed he said the Federal Reserve needs from Congress, and called for a second stimulus package. He said the problem now is much more serious than in the early 1990s. He said ending the Iraqi War would help the domestic economy. He had no concrete suggestions. Clearly Obama is banking on a basket of untested and as yet undeveloped techniques to replace oil based fuels but nothing to change anything for 10 years. As he spoke oil touched $140 a barrel and the DOW averages dropped 358 points.

What Is Cruel And Unusual Punishment For Raping A Child

Rape of a child is very cruel and unusual. Most Important Presidential Election Numbers 5-4.

Many believe the most important number for the November Presidential election is 5-4 symbollic of the liberal-conservative split on the U. S. Supreme Court, and almost as if taking its cue the The U. S. Supreme Court on Wednesday outlawed executions of people convicted of raping a child. In a 5-4 vote, the court said the Louisiana law allowing the death penalty to be imposed in such cases violates the Constitution’s ban on cruel and unusual punishment. “The death penalty is not a proportional punishment for the rape of a child,” Justice Anthony Kennedy wrote in his majority opinion. His four liberal colleagues joined him, while the four more conservative justices dissented.

The court ruling involved a 43-year old man who raped his 8-year old step daughter, and was convicted and sentences to death. There has not been an execution in the United States for a crime that did not also involve the death of the victim in 44 years. The Supreme Court banned executions for rape in 1977 in a case in which the victim was an adult woman.

In dissent Justice Alito said, “The harm that is caused to the victims and to society at large by the worst child rapists is grave,” Alito wrote. “It is the judgment of the Louisiana lawmakers and those in an increasing number of other states that these harms justify the death penalty.”

The 8th Amendment reads, “Excessive bail shall not be required, nor excessive fines imposed, nor cruel and unusual punishments inflicted.”

The split is being evoked about allegations Roe versus Wade would be overturned by a McCain admnistration.

“Suicidal Oil Avoidance Policy” is Pure Pandering Hypocrisy

Aliens made our energy policy in Bush Cheney adminIt was suggested elsewhere on hypocrisy.com that partisan environmentalists are responsible for a suicidal oil avoidance policy. That sounds like the paid comments of the oil lobby. Maybe even a lobbyist for Bush or McCain who are dependent on big corporate money to sustain their failed policies on all fronts.

Big Oil is deeply rooted in the Republican Party and it is an unholy alliance just like the drug companies and other abusers of the public trust. As long as they hold sway, we will never find alternatives to the earth destroying use of petro based energy and manufacturing.

If the Bush Administration had not delegated all of it’s energy policy discussions early in their eight years to the secretive Cheney Corporation which held fact finding and policy guiding meetings with only one side of the equation present, the current price of gas at the pump would be a lot lower than it is today.

Bush, Cheney and he other neo cons have not only missed the boat in foreign policy, energy policy, health care, national security and education, they have set us back decades when the rest of the world is advancing.

Jerry Ford once said something like our national nightmare is over. I am not prepared to say that until Barack Obama is installed in office in January 2009.

Don’t look now, but the terrorists have won

DictatorsInarguably, the most seminal event in American history in the last half-century was the September 11 terrorist attacks. On September 13, 2001 President Bush stated, “The most important thing is for us to find Osama bin Laden. It is our number one priority and we will not rest until we find him.” We fell into line behind our elected leader, resolute in avenging this horrendous act. We spoke with bravado about how we would return to the American ‘way of life’ because we were determined to live in freedom. We would not let the terrorists win. It matters not that six months to the day Bush made the comment about finding bin Laden, he said, “I don’t know where bin Laden is. I have no idea and really don’t care. It’s not that important. It’s not our priority.” By then, we had our nationalistic blinders on and President Bush was successfully using the politics of fear to keep Americans in line. With a misguided sense of ‘patriotism’ we gave up our civil rights so that our leaders could keep us safe. And even after the President of the United States proudly stated on the national news that he approved torture and abuse, we cannot summon the stomach to impeach him. Don’t look now, folks, but the terrorists have won.

The nation we have become under George Walker Bush has been shaped in large part by the 9-11 terrorist attacks. After the attacks, there was a great opportunity to bring about unity on a national and international scale. That opportunity was squandered by this administration. From the beginning, George Bush took the position that if certain nations did not do his bidding, they would be considered siding with the terrorists. When the families of those killed on 9-11 started to ask questions and press for an investigation, they were stonewalled for months. The administration finally relented and appointed the supposedly bi-partisan 9-11 commission, and then proceeded to first stonewall it, then lie to it. There are certainly enough holes in the official story to warrant an investigation, but we will never see it while George Bush is in office. The reality that every American has to face is that, at the very least, the Bush administration saw this tragic event as a broad-scale political opportunity and took advantage of our fears. That’s what dictators do.

For all the rhetoric that comes from this administration about democracy and freedom, the fact is that our civil liberties have been significantly curtailed and more are coming under assault every day as a result of 9-11. In October of 2001 our Congress foolishly passed the U.S.A. Patriot Act, giving the government unprecedented power to search telephone, e-mail, medical and financial records in the name of fighting terrorism. This was also the reason the Bush administration used to justify illegally wiretapping American citizens. The Protect America Act of 2007 retroactively legitimizes Bush’s illegal activity. If that isn’t enough, he also wants Congress to authorize retroactive immunity for the telecommunication companies that participated in this atrocious behavior.

If Ronald Reagan was ‘the great communicator,’ then George W. Bush is ‘the great liar.’ In October of 2002, Congress voted to give George Bush the power to unilaterally attack Iraq without so much as taking the time to verify and question the ‘facts’ used to justify the invasion: That Saddam Hussein was somehow involved in 9-11, that Iraq had weapons of mass destruction (WMD) and that Iraq tried to purchase yellowcake uranium from Niger. We now know that President Bush and several members of his administration, including Dick Cheney and Colin Powell, told these and many other lies in order to justify the invasion of Iraq. Had the Congress done its due diligence, the unnecessary death and destruction that this war has wrought could have been avoided.

Then we have the matter of torture. The United States has no business singling out nations like China and Cuba for human rights abuses when our president has violated (and continues to violate) the terms of the Geneva Convention. While the administration would have you believe that what happened at Abu Ghraib was the brainchild of low-level soldiers, we now know where the orders came from. President Bush himself proudly told ABC News just recently that he approved the torture techniques being used on detainees from the Iraq and Afghanistan wars.

The terrorists have won because our government and way of life have become unrecognizable. We need not fear an attack from the outside because we are destroying ourselves from within. The U.S. Constitution, the cornerstone of our democracy, has been repeatedly violated by the Bush administration. Our system of checks and balances, anchored by a free and independent media and a Congress truly acting upon the will of the people, is all but gone. Finally, the American people themselves have become complacent sheep waiting out Bush’s term of office. We are not a stronger nation because of it. We are not a safer nation because of it. And the terrorists know that.
