A South Carolina jail made national headlines last month for allegedly forbidding its inmates to read anything but the Bible. But it turns out the American Civil Liberties Union lawsuit filed against the Berkeley County Jail in Moncks Corner, S.C., isn’t over the Bible; it’s over pornography.
“The press seems to be saying that the only thing allowed in the jail is a Christian Bible, and that is just not true. And it has not been true,” Sandra J. Senn, attorney for the jail, told WXJT-TV in Jacksonville, Fla. “We allow all religious texts regardless of the religion and have for years. And there is plenty of reading materials in the jail such as novels, crossword puzzles [and] pamphlets.”
What the jail doesn’t permit is reading materials bound together by tape, staples, paper clips or clasps, nor are inmates allowed literature that would “encourage deviant sexual behavior.” The ACLU, however, argues that those restrictions limit prisoners’ choices too much and that banning pornography violates inmates’ rights.
California’s money hungry bureaucrats are on the threshold of declaring war over online sales and want to impose sales tax on internet sales to stuff the state’s depleted treasury. If they do it will set off international warfare to tax the hell out of California. California based companies are concerned that they will be targeted in retribution.
Former California Treasurer (1995 to 1999) Matt Fong, 57, has died after struggling with head and neck cancer since 2007. Matthew Kipling Fong. son of Democratic former California Secretary of State March Fong Eu served as state treasurer from 1995 to 1999 and was the 1998 Republican nominee who unsuccessfully challenged U.S. Sen. Barbara Boxer, D-Calif.
Gov. Pete Wilson in early 1991 had appointed Fong - soon after his unsuccessful bid for state controller in 1990 - to a vacancy on the state Board of Equalization. Fong earned a bachelor’s degree from the U.S. Air Force Academy in 1975, an MBA from Pepperdine University in 1982 and a law degree from Southwestern University School of Law in Los Angeles in 1985. He attained the rank of lieutenant colonel in the Air Force Reserve.
Fong also was a Federal Aviation Administration-certified flight instructor, commercial pilot and glider pilot, as well as a husband and a father of two.
He also was of counsel to the firm of Sheppard Mullin Richter & Hampton in Los Angeles, where earlier he had worked from 1985 to 1990.
The Federal Emergency Management Administration (FEMA) slapped Texans in their faces by denying help and relief to them and their state in the wake of wildfires that burned moiré than a million acres there and thousands of hoimes and buildings destroying millions of doolars in crops and livestock. Many think the denial was purely political retributionpn the conservative state and possibly against its Governor Perry who is considering running against Obama in 2012
An international panel of experts says cellphones are possibly carcinogenic to humans after reviewing details from dozens of published studies on the matter.
The statement was issued in Lyon, France, Tuesday by the International Agency for Research on Cancer - the cancer agency of the World Health Organization. The assessment by the cancer panel now goes to WHO and national health agencies for possible guidance on cellphone use.
Last year, results of a large study found no clear link between cellphones and cancer.
But some advocacy groups contend the study raised serious concerns because it showed a hint of a possible link between very heavy phone use and a rare but often deadly form of brain tumor. However, the numbers in that subgroup weren’t sufficient to make the case.
There is still no definitive evidence of a direct link between cellphone use and brain or any other cancer.
Necrology (nuh-KROL-uh-jee, neh-) noun: 1. A list of those who have died during a specific period. 2. An obituary. ETYMOLOGY:From Greek necro- (dead) + -logy (account). Earliest documented use: 1728.
The following is a work in progress in an effort to explain and hopefully oredict Obama’s heretofor inexplicable behavior in foreign policy. F or the sake of this effort I rely on the classic “new left” as characterized by the 60’s hippies who are now running the institutions they decried - most notably they explain the collapse public education.
There’s a breakthrough in understanding President Barack Obama’s foreign policy of punishing friends, rewarding enemies, and taking risks toward empowering enemies by bashing friends. It isn’t that Obama is a Muslim or a Marxist; it’s that … he is America’s first (and hopefully last) 1960s “New Left” president.
Think of how the American left looked at the Cold War. For them, the phrase “Free World” was a joke. America’s allies were often repressive dictators. In Europe, even democratic states like Britain and France were, or until recently were, colonial powers.
- Great Britain: America supported Britain and thought Winston Churchill was a hero, but what about colonialism (get his bust out of the White House!)? Say, in a country like Kenya? Mau-Maus (Obama’s grandmother revealed his grandfather was imprisoned for two years and tortured by white British soldiers during Kenya’s bloody fight in 1949 for independence, his family have said.who were called “terrorists,” good guys; British, bad guys.
- Middle East: America supported the bad guys (Israel, Jordan, Saudi Arabia) against the good guys (PLO, Egypt, Syria, Iraq).
So the leftist view has been that American allies were bad guys. And since America was also the bad guy, American allies were doubly bad guys.
In contrast, those opposing U.S. policy or allies - notably, Latin American guerrillas; Fidel Castro; the Viet Cong (or National Liberation Front if you wish); Mao Zedong; Che Guevara (remember that Che Guevara poster in the Obama election headquarters in Arizona, was it?); Patrice Lumumba; and so on and so forth were heroes.
If America is not an exceptional, better country, but often a worse one, national identity is out of date, and promoting your own country’s interests is a form of racism; if America is rich and greedy, taking more than its share of resources and causing global warming because its living standards are too high, then the aspirations of Egyptians or Venezuelans are equally or more important than those of the American people.
What other wordview could imagine something like “cap and trade” in which the U.S. taxpayers pay other countries for the right to use their own air? This is a transfer of wealth from America to others, in no way in the American interest or the interests of Americans.
Remember, Obama is desperate to be popular abroad. And he views popularity as giving the people abroad what they want, whether or not that’s in U.S. interests. If, for example, the “people” of the Middle East don’t want the United States to support Israel, then according to his worldview it shouldn’t.
for Obama the world is upside down from the historic American political mainstream. Again, I stress, both liberal and conservative. For him, the friends of America are bad; the enemies of America are good. He must win over the enemies of America - and “the people” in other countries - by showing that he appreciates that idea.
From this ideology, rather than some conspiracy or secret identity, he does much harm. And no matter how much experience he accumulates, Obama isn’t going to learn any better.
The New Left was a term used mainly in the United Kingdom and United States in reference to activists, educators, agitators and others in the 1960s and 1970s who sought to implement a broad range of reforms, in contrast to earlier leftist or Marxist movements that had taken a more vanguardist approach to social justice and focused mostly on labor unionization and questions of social class.
In the U.S., the “New Left” was associated with the Hippie movement and college campus protest movements. The confused response of the Communist Party of the USA and the Communist Party of Great Britain to the Hungarian Revolution of 1956 led some Marxist intellectuals to develop a more democratic approach to politics, opposed to what they saw as the centralised and authoritarian politics of the pre-war leftist parties.
In the United States, the “New Left” was the name loosely associated with liberal, sometimes radical, political movements that took place during the 1960s, primarily among college students. At the core of this was the Students for a Democratic Society, or SDS. Tying things back to Obama kindred spirits and cronies like Bill Ayers, Angela Davis, Valerie Jarrett, Van Jones, with their newly crowned “King” Barack Obama their 50 year-old agenda and dream is advancing with lightening speed.
The U.S. New Left drew inspiration from black radicalism, particularly the Black Power movement and the more explicitly left-wing Black Panther Party. The Panthers in turn influenced other similar militant groups, like the Young Lords, the Brown Berets and the American Indian Movement.
It could be argued that the New Left’s most successful legacy was the rebirth of feminism. As the leaders of the New Left were largely white men, women reacted to the lack of progressive gender politics with their own social intellectual movement.
The New Left was also marked by the invention of the modern environmentalist movement, which clashed with the Old Left’s disregard for the environment in favor of preserving the jobs of union workers. Environmentalism also gave rise to various other social justice movements such as the environmental justice movement, which aims to prevent the toxification of the environment of minority and disadvantaged communities.
Many of those who supported the New Left in the 1960s are now in charge of the kinds of institutions they once opposedCritics of this orthodoxy such as Allan Bloom and Roger Scruton claim that New Left radical egalitarianism is motivated by anti-Western nihilism.
Three-term member of Congress, founder of the House Tea Party Caucus, parent to 23 foster children, and one of Time magazine’s 100 Most Influential People in the World Michele Bachmann has a new niche she thinks will propel her to the front of the GOP pack to oppose Obama in 2012 - she’s claiming she is “No Sarah Palin.”
Outgoing Secretary of defense Gates scrapped the F-22 stealth super fighter in favor of the F-35 Joint Strike Fighter saying it was similarly capable and that China would not even have a similar capability for decades which has since turned out to be bunk.
The F-35 is even worse than the sharpest critics claimed — now.the Israel Air Force and Defense Ministry have been scrambling to determine the future of the Joint Strike Fighter amid threats from Congress. They said a high-level Israeli defense delegation would travel to Washington to examine the JSF project and a delivery schedule.
“We knew there were problems with the airplane, but things are much worse than we had been told,” an official said.
China and even Russia are said to be advancing quickly past the U. S. pushing it into second place. Israel is worried it will be forced to buy either Chinese or Russian fighters or more likely build its own.
A Gallup poll released Memorial Day shows a disconnect between United States military personnel and civilians in how they feel about the performance of President Barack Obama. civilian respondents approved of Obama’s performance, while 37 percent of their military counterparts gave the president a favorable review. Older respondents were more likely to give lower marks than younger ones. Active-duty personnel were more likely to decline to discuss their views on Obama’s performance.
Hamas had stockpiled more than 10,000 by early May - in defiance of Israel’s partial blockade of the Gaza Strip. Following April 9, when the Palestinian extremists shot 133 rockets at seven Israeli cities, Egypt’s military rulers persuaded Israel to accept a ceasefire in lieu of an operation for smashing this arsenal. By September, when Egypt holds elections that Hamas’ parent the Muslim Brotherhood is heavily tipped to win, Hamas will have accumulated 11,000 missiles.
With the Muslim Brotherhood effectively in control of Egypt and consequently of its border with Gaza all bets are off.
When Israeli Prime Minister Binyamin Netanyahu told the Knesset Foreign Affairs and Security Committee May 30 about the Palestinian Hamas’s expanding control of Egyptian Sinai, he omitted to mention the arms smuggling tunnels which openly flout Israel’s blockade. The interaction between the Gaza Strip and Sinai and the effect it has of undermining Egypt’s sovereign control of the strategic peninsula, which he also mentioned, is an old story going back years.
What has changed since Hosni Mubarak’s ouster in February is that the Muslim Brotherhood and its offshoot Hamas have both gained traction in Egypt proper.
But Israel and its military continue to hold back from stemming the arms flow, now including anti-tank and anti-air missiles, into the Gaza Strip, just as they never interfered with Hizballah’s acquisition of thousands of advanced rockets from Iran and Syria.
Before the current ceasefire, Hamas demonstrated in a single day, Saturday, April 9, that its improved missiles could hit the fringes of Kiryat Gat 21 kilometers from Gaza and Rishon Lezion, double that distance.
How long or if the threat of destruction by the IDF can keep Hamas at bay and at peace remains an open question.
President Obama arrived in France for the G8 summit, a meeting of the world’s top economic powers. To give you an idea of how bad our economy is doing, when the president arrived, the other countries were like, “What are you doing here?” - Leno
Persistent reports say Obama and Russian President Dmitry Medvedev on Friday, May 27, came to an reciprocal understanding on the sidelines of the G8 summit in Deauville about the fate of the Syrian and Libyan rulers.
Obama is reported to have promised Medvedev to let Assad finish off the uprising against him without too much pressure from the US and the West. Neither the US nor Russia sees anyone in the Libyan rebel political or military leadership capable of taking over the reins of power in Tripoli.
Obama and Medvedev also quietly agreed, those sources say, that French President Nicolas Sarkozy and British Prime Minister David Cameron, despite their excessive involvement in the Libyan war, were wasting their time because they had no chance of making Qaddafi leave.
So far, the U. S. and NATO airstrikes have NOT disabled any of Gadafi’s five combat brigades.
Apparently relying on the third time’s a charm adage Harold Camping is now predicting that the world will end in October.
The International Atomic Energy Administration’s ( I. A. E. A.) in a nine-page report raised questions last week about whether Iran has sought to investigate seven different kinds of technology ranging from atomic triggers and detonators to uranium fuel. Together, the technologies could make a type of atom bomb known as an implosion device, which is what senior staff members of the I.A.E.A. have warned that Iran is able to build. The fissile material is plutonium P-239 which is made by adding a neutron to refined uranium. Except for overtly labeling Iran’s nuclear program military the IAEA that almost always waffles and dithers is now clearly more convinced than evcer of Iran’s military motives.
Weapons based on implosion are considered advanced models compared with the bomb that the United States dropped on Hiroshima. In these devices, the detonation of a sphere of conventional explosives creates a blast wave that compresses a central ball of plutonium into a supercritical mass, starting the chain reaction that ends in a nuclear explosion.
Implosion designs, are compact and efficient by nature, things necessary for making nuclear warheads small and powerful enough to fit atop a missile like Iran’s Shahab-3 missiles that have the range to strike targets throughout the Middle East and into Pakistan and even India and Turkey..
Iran has dismissed charges that it is pursuing such technologies as lies based on fabricated documents or real ones taken out of context. It insists that its atomic program is meant exclusively for such peaceful objectives as producing medical isotopes and electric power. The result has been a tense standoff. But, almost no one believes Iran’s intentions are peaceful.
Last week’s report said the director general of the I.A.E.A., Yukiya Amano, recently wrote to Iranian officials to reiterate the agency’s concerns about the arms evidence and request “prompt access” to a wide range of Iranian facilities and individuals.
The report said Mr. Amano “urges Iran to respond positively” in order to establish “the exclusively peaceful nature” of its program.
Such an implosion device, like the bomb dropped on Nagasaki, can be the core of enhance nuclear devices often called “hydrogen bombs” which is malepropic abd nore correctly a thermo-nuclear bomb that can be many times more powerful. It is likely that Iran wiould have to import the triggering circuits or may already have acquired those from China, Pakistan or elsewhere.
When Obama’s coerced Israel not to destroy Iran’s nuclear weapons program pandemonium erupted sending shock through out the Middle EWast abnd sending former U. SA. Allies scrambling to new alliances. Saudi Arabia called in its nuclear ticket pigeon holing two Pakistani nuclear warheads. The Saudi’s had financed Pakistan’s nuclear weapons program giving it access to nukes without having to overtly develop one itself or even have it on its territory.
Charlotte, North Carolina city bureaucrats want to fine Eddie Sales $4,000 for “improperly” pruning the crape myrtles at his church, Albemarle Road Presbyterian Church. Charlotte has had a tree ordinance since 1978, and when trees are “incorrectly pruned or topped”, people can be subject to fines of $100 per offended branch its taxpayer paid Urban Forester says.
