For the first time in Gallup’s tracking of the issue, a majority of Americans (53%) believe same-sex marriage should be recognized by the law as valid, with the same rights as traditional marriages. The increase since last year came exclusively among political independents and Democrats. Republicans’ views did not change.

In his first speech as president to the main American-Israeli lobby group, the American Israel Public Affairs Committee, (AIPAC) Obama said his reference to the border issue in a major policy address on the Middle East on Thursday “means that the parties themselves — Israelis and Palestinians — will negotiate a border that is different than the one that existed on June 4, 1967,” the eve of the six-day war in which Israel seized the West Bank, Gaza Strip and other territory.

 

“That’s what mutually agreed-upon swaps means. It is a well-known formula to all who have worked on this issue for a generation,” Obama said to applause. “It allows the parties themselves to account for the changes that have taken place over the last 44 years,” including the new demographic realities on the ground and the needs of both sides.

He later added: “If there is a controversy, then, it’s not based in substance.”

Obama also told the AIPAC meeting that his speech Thursday made clear a long accepted outline for the negotiations.

“There was nothing particularly original in my proposal; this basic framework for negotiations has long been the basis for discussions among the parties, including previous U.S. administrations,” Obama said.

Israel’s Prime Minister Naetanyahu is expected to take his case to the U. S. Congress Tuesday and set the record straight to unmuddle Obama’s fumbling, foulups.

The Israel Army has been reinforcing troops along the northern borders amid intelligence that Hamas and Hizbullah were organizing what could be weekly attempts to infiltrate Israel. National Union MK Michael Ben-Ari also slammed Obama’s speech, calling it “a landmine with pretty wrapping.”

Environment Minister Gilad Erdan, who as a minister close to Netanyahu must be more diplomatic, complained on Channel 2 that according to Obama’s approach, the Palestinians would receive their demands on borders before negotiations begin.

“Once they have everything from the start, they have no reason to make any concessions,”Erdan said.

But opposition leader Tzipi Livni said Obama’s plan was clearly in Israel’s interests, while the diplomatic stalemate that she believes was brought on by Netanyahu is not.

“On his visit, Netanyahu must display the leadership necessary now to create the conditions necessary to restart negotiations with those who are ready to end the conflict,” Livni said. “Only a real Israeli initiative with content that can receive American and international support can be an answer to the current dangers and opportunities.” Her Kadima colleague, MK Yoel Hasson, warned that if Netanyahu did not take immediate action, he would bring Israel into deeper international isolation and borders forced on Israel unilaterally.

Obama’s declaration in his policy speech Thursday, May 19, that Israel should withdraw to the 1967 lines with mutually agreed territorial swaps caused consternation in Jerusalem. Before flying to Washington, Prime Minister Binyamin Netanyahu stated: The 1967 lines are indefensible. Israeli security demands an IDF presence on the Jordan River. Israel appreciates the US president’s commitment to peace but a Palestinian state cannot rise at the expense of Israel’s existence.

In his statement, the Prime Minister pointed out that not only the US but the Palestinians must recognize Israel as the national home of the Jewish people and a peace accord must guarantee an end to all claims against the Jewish State of Israel.

In effect, Israel has rejected Obama’s new Middle East policy as it relates to resolving its dispute with the Palestinians before he meets the US president at the White House Friday.

As presented Thursday night, Obama call for mutual swaps of land amounted to calling on Israel hand over to the Palestinians large chunks of sovereign territory in return for leaving the settlement blocks in the West Bank. This demand was not agreed in the exchanges between the White House and the Prime Minster’s Office ahead of the speech. It also contradicts the guarantee the Bush presidency gave Prime Minister Ariel Sharon in 2004 not to force Israel to return to the indefensible borders of 1967.

Obama was also the first US president to demand that Israeli Defense Forces withdraw from the Palestinian state without the security measures Israel required after numerous Arab and Palestinian attacks and still threatened. The US President’s plan would also entail the IDF’s evacuation of its the vital defense lines in the Jordan.

The US president stated repeatedly that the Palestinian state was entitled to “a sovereign, contiguous state” bordering on Egypt, Jordan and Israel. This would give the Palestinian state sole control of its borders without regard to Israeli’s security requirements. Israel was advised to be satisfied with America’s “unshakeable commitment” to its security.
Obama introduced a new concept for potential Israel-Palestinian peace negotiations, from which he admitted “the Palestinians have walked away.” The Palestinians state would be “non-militarized,” he said - not demilitarized as Israel has demanded but possessed of an army of a size to be negotiated by the parties.
Washington sources informed reporters later that Obama’s speech was delayed by more than an hour over a behind-the-scenes argument the White House had with Jerusalem and Ramallah in pursuit of approval from both for the fundamentals contained in his speech.

Iran organized the recruitment of thousands of followers to storm the borders of Israel earlier this month

Iran’s Islamic Revolutionary Guard Corps ordered Hamas and Hizbullah to organize an assault on Israel on May 15, the day of the declaration of the Jewish state and regarded by Arabs as catastrophe, or “nakbah.”

The opposition said Hamas and Hizbullah leaders were summoned to Teheran in April to arrange the storming of Israel’s borders from Lebanon, Syria and the Gaza Strip.

Analysts agreed that Iran and Syria cooperated in the organization of the assault on Israel. They said the transport of the Palestinians and other Arabs from southern Syria to the Israeli border could not have taken place without the approval of the regime of Syrian President Bashar Assad.

An IRGC defector, Reza Khalili, said Teheran has been alarmed by the Arab revolt in Syria. Khalili said Iran was searching for any means to divert the unrest in Syria toward Israel.

“They [border rampages] were part of a larger plan to increase the pressure on Israel, protect Syrian President Assad, and to assert Iran’s dominance as the leader of the revolutionary forces in the region,” Kahlili said.

“The Iranians had sent IRGC intelligence officers to Syria and Lebanon to invite these people to Teheran,” Hussein Zohari, spokesman for the opposition Organization of Iranian People’s Fedaii Guerrillas, said. “This shows that Iran was deeply involved in planning and coordinating of these attacks.”

In an interview to the U.S. news agency Newsmax, Zohari said the opposition had monitored the arrival of Hamas and Hizbullah leaders in early 2011. He said information on the meeting in Teheran came from dissidents in IRGC.

“We initially thought they had come for some kind of military training, but then our people told us it was the political leadership that had come,” Zohari said.

After a five-year study of 200,000 galaxies, scientists are more certain than ever that dark energy acts as a repulsive force, tearing the universe apart at an accelerating rate. The research confirms the idea that dark energy dominates gravity throughout the cosmos. But no one has any idea what dark energy actually is or how it works.

Dark energy was first proposed in the 1990s as astronomers discovered supernovae were moving away from us at accelerating speeds. This did not fit with prevailing theories of gravity, so scientists determined a new force called dark energy was to blame. The new survey independently verifies those earlier cosmological expansion observations,

The universe is about 13.7 billion years old, according to the best estimates, and for a little more than half that life it was dominated by the influence of gravity. All the baryonic matter, meaning matter with atoms and their constituent parts, was close enough together for gravity to have an influence. It helped form galaxies and galaxy clusters, for instance. But roughly 8 billion years after the Big Bang first flung everything apart, as the universe grew more and more diffuse, gravity’s power apparently succumbed to the increasing influence of dark energy. Galaxy cluster formation slowed down. Things started to fall apart.

Dark energy accounts for about 73 percent of the mass-energy of the universe. Dark matter, which is only slightly better understood, makes up about 23 percent of the universe. The remaining 4 percent is baryonic matter - galaxies, stars, the solar system, and you.

Dark energy will continue to speed up this cosmic expansion, and someday, everything will be so far apart that we won’t be able to see other galaxies or even other stars in the Milky Way. Let’s hope we find ETs before then.
