Three Navy SEALs, who were hailed as heroes for capturing one of Iraq’s most wanted alleged terrorists, are now being court martialed this week. Why? The poor delicate flower of Iraqi manhood says someone punched him and he got a bloody lip.
The complaint was made by Ahmed Hashim Abedm, the alleged mastermind of the gruesome 2004 murder and mutilation of four American contractors in Fallujah. The four murdered Americans worked in the security division of Blackwater USA. The bodies of two were hung from a bridge over the Euphrates River.
The accused SEALS are Petty Officers Matthew McCabe, Jonathan Keefe and Julio Huertas They have refused non-judicial punishment — called a captain’s mast — and have requested a trial by court-martial.
Only if you have a perfect record is an enlisted sailor able to wear gold insignia on their dress blue uniform. Otherwise they weae red. Perhaps that sense of pride, and their innocence drove these men to demand a full trial with full testimony. That is their right.
America, and a handful of timid allies, are fighting an enemy who jeers at the Geneva and Hague conventions, sawing the heads off civilian kidnap victims with rusty swords while (in the current case) gleefully videotaping the proceedings. Yet elite U.S. SEALs could now lose their careers because the poor captured enemy combatant says someone gave him an elbow in the mouth?
More revelations will follow, make no mistake. In all likelihood they deprived him of his teddy bear, served him a lukewarm dinner, and also made disparaging remarks about his tribe’s sanitary habits and his mother’s pulchritude.
So, three brave Navy SEALS will go on trial — without benefit of the very constitutional guarantees which we will now provide to a separate set of murderous cutthroats in the federal courthouse in New York City.
This is nonsense. Obama should publicly send the court-martial board a firm signal of support for the men who brought in Ahmed Hashim Abed. Obama won’t because he’s too busy picking up his absurdly awarded Nobel Peace Prize and popping off at the Copenhagen Conference.
The Courts Martial will take place Monday at Norfolk, Virginia.
This is shameful.

Comment by Chief Hypocrite on 6 December 2009:
As Rumsfeld said, democracy is untidy (or was it freedom?).
Too bad we have to demonstrate our untidiness so frequently while we eat our own. Enemies and friends have always questioned how we can prosper with so many contradictions and inconsistent self restraints.
The reasons for our prior successes creating our commercial and political hegemony are not the idealistic ones our politicians of all stripes always give us that honestly send goosebumps down my spine because they make do me feel good and feel extra proud for a moment, but rather that we simply had few capitalist competitors.
That has changed now that totalitarian and other non democratic governments have embraced government owned capitalism, unabashedly used in an unfettered manner to further their pecuniary interest laughing at the arrogance behind our hypocritical proclamations.
Our idealism, political slogans and self immolation such as when such and such a president is accused of violating the constitution in great inside detail with film at 11 (make that 24/7/360) insinuating that that atrocity has never been done before. Most know that despite our idealism and our mostly pretty admirable efforts, such atrocities against the constitution has never happened except since it was signed.
All this saves our competitors and our continuing cold and hot war enemies the time and money to create their own anti US talking points. let alone giving them strategic and order of battle intelligence for free that we have to spend many billions to get and ours is probably inferior.
Maybe we did it all first, but whatever we have done, others now seem to be doing better. And there are more of them now.
