The 83 Democratic congressmen, and 20-plus Democratic senators who come from red states that McCain carried a year ago, were sent a loud message Tuesday that they cannot count on Obama to carry them through. A three deep sweep in Virginia of Governor, Lt. Governor and Attorney General and the stunning repudiation of one term New Jersey Governor Corzine despite repeated campaign appearances by Obama and Biden has caused something of an unusual east coast earthquake.
In addition to the obvious consequences the sudden failure of the campaigner-in-chief to deliver for the Democrats will mean scores of challengers who have been deciding will now almost certainly come out of the closet.
Maine’s banning of homosexual marriage; sweeping refusal of all sorts of fund raising tax and fee schemes at local levels (an informal count shows 3 of 4 failing to pass), and even the election of moderates to Santa Barbara’s notoriously liberal City Council signal a big shift. If not to the right at least deep into the center.
It would be premature to brand this a watershed but there is certainly something leaking through the ceiling of the Oval Office. While that may just be the ooze from an overflowing toilet upstairs somethings big happened yesterday.
· First, independents – now the nation’s biggest non-political party – turned away from Obama and liberal ideas marching abreast into the political center turning their back on radicalism, and
· Second, Democrats nationwide will think longer and harder about the political consequences of voting for the now $1.2 trillion nationalized Obamacare scheme. This will have a particularly heavy impact on so-called Blue-dog Democrats who are already nervous.
Republicans still tried to snatch defeat from the jaws of victory with an ideological feud in upstate New York that lost a tradition conservative Congressional seat to a liberal Democrat.
