World’s Premiere Demagogue Crumbles Under Pressure

Flip-flopping is nothing new in politics, but do the American people know how frequently their fearless leader has actually flip-flopped himself? Here are a few examples.

Regarding campaign contributions during the primaries he referred to union contributions as “special interest” money. Then as time went on he garnered his own union endorsements and respectfully referred to them as “representatives of working people.”  Hmmm?

How about the more popular flip-flop. In 2007 Obama was asked if he would agree to public financing of a presidential election if his opponent agreed as well. His answer? A definitive “yes.” Thereafter Obama attached numerous conditions to the agreement, such as regulating spending by outside groups, and therefore backpedaled on what he said. When questioned on this he never responded directly but his spokesperson said, “he never committed himself on the matter.” How convenient.

Illegal immigration was a hot topic in 2004 when Obama was asked if the government should crack down on businesses that hired illegal immigrants. He opposed the concept wholeheartedly. Then, in January of 2008, the issue came up again during a televised debate. Public opinion had changed and the controversial issue was coming to a boiling point. What was his response then? “We do have to crack down on those employers that are taking advantage of the situation.” Wow! Where did that come from?

In 2004 Obama made a statement regarding the Cuban embargo. “It’s time to end the embargo with Cuba because it has utterly failed in the effort to overthrow Castro.” Ready for the flip? In August of 2007 he spoke to a group of Cuban Americans in Miami and said, “I wouldn’t take off the embargo because it’s an important inducement for change.” There’s that “change” word again. The only change  Mr. O seems to truly understand is the change of his tune in regards to the issues.

How about a subject that’s on the table again today in California, the decriminalization of marijuana. Before becoming a Senator, in January of 2004, Obama spoke to a body of college students in Illinois and supported eliminating criminal penalties for the use of marijuana. Here’s the flop. In October of 2007, the same year mind you, during a presidential debate with other Democratic candidates, he opposed decriminalization of marijuana usage. The man can’t stand still. Was that the popular wisdom, the popular choice at the time? I would have to guess so considering he changed his mind on the issue in less than nine months.

These are but a few and there are many more piling up every day. Not that other politicians don’t do the same, but Obama? Where is the outcry? Where is the excoriation and derision of the liberal savior? The latest flip-flop leaves more to the imagination — or not.

Has his boss, Nancy Pelosi, come with hat in hand asking Obama to get her out of this political quagmire? Does she need him to get both sides of the isle to drop the issue in order to save any credibility that may remain? There’s no doubt it’s a hot potato the Democrats now wish they hadn’t started tossing around, yet have no idea of how to handle it.

I’m talking about the torture issue. First the accusations, the Bush witch hunt. Then, who do we prosecute? Now, it’s about releasing the photos and national security. Isn’t the Administration smart enough to foresee these issues? With the likes of Pelosi, Reed, Frank and others at the far left, and pressure from the right bearing down on him, Obama has a long row to hoe. I’ll iterate, Obama will be a one term president. He can’t appease all and can’t stay in the middle long enough to win another election, even if there were enough votes in the middle to support him.

Obama wants to make nice with everyone, the left and the right. He wants to keep peace and have everyone like him. A quintessential demagogue flipping and flopping from one issue to the next in the hope of appeasing everyone, and in so doing, makes no one happy.

In his desperate attempt to keep the peace and remain popular he’s doing nothing more than displaying lessons learned early in his political career. To side with whomever is the strongest, loudest or nearest in a relentless quest to avoid rows. To run with the hare and hunt with the hounds would be a felicitous depiction of Obama’s performance thus far.

  1. Good rant and graphic. Obama is shallow in so many aspects as to defy explaination. I grant his a “gentleman’s ‘C’ based on averaged marks of: F-foreign polcy; A-in puff and a pile in the moribund middle.
The hell of it will be his claiming success with an economy that recovered despite his best efforts and then denial when inflation strikes with a venegence.
