Ukraine’s 50 Million People’s Enslavement Are At Stake
Ukraine with close to fifty million people, is, by far, more populous and important than any other former Soviet republic or satellite. Russia, with a population of 142 million and dropping, needs to take over Ukraine to reassert itself as a global power. Asserting such power is the ambition and intention of Russian Prime Minister and shadow President Vlad Putin.
How important is this - well Russian agents poisoned the elected Ukraine President Viktor Yushchenko for having the temerity of avowing, atheist forbid, a democracy.
When Viktor had the good judgment of not dying Russia cut off its natural gas supply freezing Ukrainians in their unheated homes. Germany is itself dependent on Russian natural gas supplied by a pipeline that U. S. President blocked starving Russia of cash, that it has not supported Ukraine’s entrance into NATO.
Barack Obama initially treated the Russian invasion as a border conflict asserting his Rodney King-like foreign policy will not help 50 million Ukrainian independence. Ukraine, located right next to NATO members Poland, Hungary, Slovakia, and Romania, can and should be defended by NATO.
Putin is no fool and senses opportunity and is willing to wait and see if America elects an indecisive president, and if it does he will immediately exploit that to enslave the 50 million Ukrainians to fulfill his dream of his own Lenin-like Kremlin mausoleum.

This is the very reason that the Ukranian president visited Georgia during the onslaught. The Ukraine needs to be quickly admitted to NATO. Even Zbignew Brzezhinski atated this in 1991 in his landmark book “The Grand Chessboard” which is must reading for anyone commenting on Russia and Central Asia. I often disagree with Zbig, but he certainly was right on this one.
“Negativnoye obayanie” is a Russian term meaning “negative charm”—it is taken as a compliment to Ivan the Terible, Stalin and all Russian/Soviet leaders of strenght. The principle is that a stern father may beat the child often and severely, but give it just enough nourishment to live. Putin is such a “nurterer”.

Ivan - I know Zbig’s book but missed any insistence about Ukraine and NATO. My bias is likely stilted because he suffered under Carter’s Curse, and that cluck was so busy loosing so much in so many places Zbig was rendered impotent. I certainly agree keeping 50 million tough Ukranians independent and democratic is JOB ONE
Comment by Marshall Ivan Risidin on 15 August 2008:
Richard, my recollection that Zbig was encouraging Ukraine, after Poland et al, into NATO to deprive Russia of significant power base so as later to coopt Russia itself in order to influence events in Kazakhstan–where Zbig calculates the center of world interest will be in 20 years [oil reserves]. His hope was to have sufficient mass to divert China from military means while creating a broader trading opportunity for all.
The Chinese, reading English far better than we read Chinese, are fully aware of this strategy and are terrified of being coopted.
