Where the averge guy livesAdmitting to Adulterous Relationship And Trying to Shut Her up; Now Staff Says There Are Payoffs Too.

Former Democrat Senator, VP candidate and presidential candidate John Edwards confessed to his adulterous relationship with a campaign aide and admitted to visiting her at the Beverly Hilton Hotel a week ago to convince her to shut-up, he said there was no pay off.

Turns out his campaign has been paying off the unemployed woman to the tune of $15,000 enabling her to rent a $3,000,000 home in an exclusive gated community in Santa Barbara but, Edwards “didn’t know about it.” Edwards now says he will take a paternity test.

In a further bizarre explanation on Saturday’s Good Morning America Edwards explained that he became a self-absorbed, narcissistic, nincompoop because of his success as a lawyer and politician. He says the sexual relationship with the aide ended in 2006 so he couldn’t possibly be the child’s father because the baby girl was born February 7, 2008 and the math doesn’t work. Edwards says he told his wife of 31 years in 2006 and she was furious which is about the only believable part of his fairy tale.

  1. Deb, since you asked me, I am not the least surprised by the Edwards thingy. To me it was always clear an uncontrolled ego is why he ran for pres and that he likely was having an affair or two. As a Democrat he had to have a populist message so he fabricated one. Since he made many millions suing corporations who caused real harm to individuals, probably making a personal 30% windfall plus expenses from those lottery awards, he picked the average man to brag about being the champion of, as false a position as one can imagine. Few Democrats (only some Hillary and Obama supporters) would ever want to notice these things so well illustrated in a campaign film piece by his now famous film maker lover. While on an airplane, slouching and without a tie, he talked about wanting to be filmed in a normal environment like the average man he routinely saves as an everyday superhero, rather than a more staged one where he is shown like a “Ken Doll”, his own words. Filmed by her. She deserves an academy award, we are so lucky he did not become president or an important policy maker in an Obama administration. Unfortunately there are, have been, and will be, so many other ego driven misjudgments in any administration, we will not miss all the speeding bullets, just this one that his over the top hubris saved us from.

  2. This is the guy who expressed “worry” over same-sex marriage! If this were not so infuriating I’d be laughing. He’s just another heterosexual hypocrite trying to deny one group of people (mine, by the way) civil rights based on, yes, here we go again: Religious ideology. This is what he expressed on a candidate forum sponsored by the Logo network. I wonder what his religion says about adultery!

  3. He was only “worried” about votes. Gads, I hate it when I sound so cynical.

  4. Well, at least, we finally get to talk about sex, this election cycle!

It definitely takes some serious brass ones to continue a run at the presidency when you know you have T-Rex sized skeleton in your closet. Maybe he thought he could get over the way that Clinton did when he got caught with his boxers locked in Gennifer Flowers closet.

A lot of liberals are upset that Edwards had the gall to have an affair, but I think the hubris is in the constant lies when responding to questions of the affair. That’s the thing that helped hang Clinton by his cigar-scented petard…the lie.

John Edwards is no better than the average joe (who has no high stakes interests) when it comes to marital infidelity. It’s as old as the oldest profession and not solely the arena of rich politicos.

It would have been nice if Edwards had skipped his presidential bid and saved his supporters a whole lot of time and money. The fact that his wife continued to endorse his presidential bid, despite this potential albatross seems to exude a level of naivete or even hubris on her part (thinking that maybe if she stood by her man, a la Hilary, that even “when” this came out during the presidential election race, that they would overcome like Bill and Hilary did).

Rule number one in politics: Keep it in your pants or stay out of the race.

  5. Hey Chief, sorry I’m a bit slow on the uptake, but I’m off my game a bit with my personal issues weighing heavy these days. Do I think Edwards is a jerk? Absolutely. A hypocrite? Without doubt. And, by the way, he’s not far enough to the left for me so he’s not my candidate. However, I think it’s also equally hypocritical to talk about his political career being over because of this. You’ve got to be kidding me. It only goes to prove how obsessed Americans are with sex. Period.

Every single politician and pundit is pointing out the fact that Edwards’ lying about his personal situation will destroy his credibility and, therefore, his career. Lying and covering up facts didn’t hurt George Bush any. In fact, he’s carried the habit right into the White House.

In the end, John Edwards hurt nobody but himself. He didn’t order torture. He didn’t lie to Congress about the need to invade Iraq (and, thus, cause many deaths on both sides of the coin). He didn’t illegally wiretap his own citizens. He’s another hypocritical politician who uses family and faith as ‘positioning’ for his political aspirations. He’s also not a very bright hypocrite because he’s failed to learn the lessons the rest of the hypocritical politicians (and I’m including Bill Clinton in this mix even though I voted for him twice) have learned: It never stays private.

John Edwards is a private citizen right now. He does not hold public office. Funny. I haven’t seen much mention of Alaska Senator Ted Stevens’ transgressions. Nobody seems to be wondering if it means the end of his career. I believe he’s running for re-election, isn’t he?

  6. Deb, Ted Stevens was soundly chastised by Richard Cochrane at http://hypocrisy.com/2008/07/29/longest-serving-gop-senator-worthy-of-first-class-hypocrisy-h-a-a-nomination/ if his title has any bearing on his opinion. Opinions of political longevity seem to be necessary sport for the media trying to fill the hours up.

  7. Hey Chief, I expected that Richard would. Overall, however, I don’t think the mainstream media jumped on that issue the way they’re jumping on Edwards’infidelity. And, honestly, I spent my day conducting a bit of an experiment. Believe me, it was nothing scientific and it wasn’t even statistically sound, but it was rather telling.

I had to attend a meeting this afternoon and there were about 12 attendees besides myself. Everyone, to a person, was absolutely outraged over Edwards’ situation. When I asked about Ted Stevens, there were a couple of people who didn’t even know who he was. Several others, however, just shrugged their shoulders and basically said, “hey, every politician does it.”

My point is that the American public has a thing about ’sex’ to the point where politicians’ personal indiscretions are often viewed as more critical than those of politicians who outright break the law while in office. I just think that’s kind of crazy from where I’m sitting.

Do I think Edwards is a scum? Absolutely. I think his behavior is reprehensible given the situation with his wife, whether in remission or not. His behavior would be reprehensible even if she didn’t have a diagnosis. He’s a perfect candidate for the H-A-A award. However, I think there’s a real disconnect in America about which behavior is more harmful to the public. I don’t think John Edwards has harmed the public, and he certainly hasn’t broken the law.

  8. Deb- Stevens is a bright red hypocrite. Hope he goes to jail. The MSM missing most things of importance.
