One, but only one of the reasons the McClellan memoir is shaking up the Bush administration so much, could be because W was probably sincere in his desire to have someone close to him to look back “on the good old days” after he retires to Crawford. After all, who thinks Bush will do anything like Jimmy Carter to burnish his image after leaving office? Certainly not those who think the Bush response to the Katrina disaster was a direct result of his administrations incompetence, accusing him of being racist and unconcerned.
Bush spokesmen and women from Karl Rove to Fran Townsend, with some indignation are accusing Scott McClellan of actions consistent with hypocrisy. The charge is basically that despite his inside position he never spoke up and expressed these opinions when he supposedly had them and when he could have theoretically impacted policy is probably accurate
Probably like most administrations, Bush seems to have surrounded himself with a variety of personalities. Some were cowering, quietly loyal types like McClellan and Alberto Gonzalez or hyper influencers like Rumsfield and Cheney and Rove. After a mass murder, neighbors often say “he was so quiet, it’s hard to believe”.
Some are like Tony Snow and Colin Powell who were more limited in their influence than the hyper influencers above, but were loyal and talented nonetheless.
Can you imagine the pressure so many Bush loyalists with Scotts inside experience are getting from publishers to write their version of a “tell all” memoir? Who will be next?
