oudou Diene (b. 1941) (pronounced Doo-Doo) a French educated lawyer from Senegal is the United Nations Special Rapporteur on contemporary forms of racism, racial discrimination, xenophobia and related intolerance.
A special U.N. human rights investigator is visiting the United States this month to probe racism, an issue that has forced its way into the race to secure the Democratic Party’s presidential nomination. The United Nations would meet federal and local officials, as well as lawmakers and judicial authorities during the May 19-June 6 visit. Race has become a central issue in the U.S. election cycle because Sen. Barack Obama, the frontrunner in the battle for the Democratic nomination battle, could become the America’s first African American president.
The UN monitored the 2004 US presidential election after it was invited by Colin Powell to observe. The US State Department is said to have issued an invitation to it for monitoring in 2008. Reports of what or who prompted the request or issued it are unclear and confused.
