Exxon Mobil makes record profit, gets huge tax break and still cries poor me?
As Exxon reveals the largest profit in it’s company’s history, no wait IN ANY company’s history, ever, in the whole world, it calls poor mouth and has it’s public relations machine in full swing telling us why? Why, we should not be MAD at them for having all this money as we struggle to pay our bills and fill our cars with over priced gas.
First of all, oil is getting hard to find. They have to dig in deeper and deeper to find this ever more expensive oil. They need to dig in more sensitive areas of the planet. Which costs more, why?
Because they are more careful in sensitive areas and have to follow EPA regulations?
Silly. Please don’t make the Exxon guys laugh. They are an old industry and very very fat. And you know very embarrassing things can happen when “old companies laugh too hard .” They leak. And no one likes those kinds of leaks in THAT sensitive area.
No . It costs more because ENVIRONMENTAL ACTIVISTS make it harder to drill in those sensitive areas. And there are those people who need to be “lobbied into the correct frame of mind” so the big drill can continue.
Now the fact that refining what they have now could bring the costs down in the immediate future might be good for you but a refinery has not been built in America since …Thirty years! Really thirty years? Boy these guys do look at the BIG picture. I guess they just KNEW in thirty years we would not need another refinery.
They also complain that the reason that their profits “seem” so large is because other countries have taken over their oil industries and run them and are not for profit.
Really, No kidding? Huh ? What AN idea.
Oh, and yes the other reason they have record profits is NOT that they have been in any way gouging you at the pumps or in your homes but rather that other companies like Shell have stopped trying to drill in these “tougher” sites. So what? I guess that means they are scooping up their rivals and their rivals customers one by one.
Sounds like a monopoly to me?
It seems it takes money to make money and we should be GLAD that they make this much money so they can REinvest in drilling ever deeper holes in ever more sensitive areas.
Have I about got that right. Exxon? Please!! Correct me if I have misstated your position in some way.
I may have a point or two about your reinvestment of capital.
The oil companies MAY FIRST have to go to that NEW TV show with Dr. DREW. Do you know the one? Where celebrities go to get “clean” from their addictions. RIGHT IN FULL VIEW and for the entertainment of the American people.
I say this for several obvious reasons. I mean, beyond the entertainment value alone of being able to watch these oil company Big Wigs have to be weened off of Mother Earth’s Fossil Breasts and on to a more productive, cleaner, dare I say GROWN UP form of energy production. Not to mention the ratings!
But Guys Your Mother called it’s time to invest in NON-FOSSIL fuels. No Future-GEN, or “oil this” or “coal that”. Get off the “stuff” She wants you to GET CLEAN MAN.
We have been using this method of burning for fuel since the first cave man saw lightning strike a tree and thought “hey, I could hit some one with that.” And Mrs. cave man replied, “No, idiot we can stay warm with it pick it up and carry it home.”
Coal , oil and gas are the same scientific idea, but you have to wait a lot longer for the “stick” to grow back. And it’s harder and more dangerous to find.
But getting them to “give up the breast will not be easy”
However, think of the possibilities, they could move OUT of Mother Earth’s basement and get real jobs using renewable energy. Energy that does not KILL their mother and make her look older that she really is.
She has a lot of wind left in her yet, the sun still shines brightly on her face (when the smoke clears) and she has delights yet untold and unbound all around.
But if you keep insisting on reinvesting in the same old “digging in her basement”(yes even for nuclear products) even Mother Nature is going to start giving you hints. She will start leaving little “reminders”, like global warming, and filthy air, and dirty water. She wants you to grow up. Move along to find a better way to energize yourself.
She’ll keep watching. Mother’s always do. Even when you think she has long thought you self reliant and grown up. So study hard, invest in clean energy which you know MOTHER would appreciate, and I promise Mother will be happier and you and all the rest of us can and will be healthier wealthier and wiser.

Did Sam say Exxon had a monopoly? Hold on, let me check. I will copy it.
“Sounds like a monopoly to me?” Not sure, but seems he wants readers to think Exxon Mobil has a monopoly, whether he really thinks that or not. Sounds like old fashioned hypocrisy to me.
Just in case I read that right, I looked up monopoly in the wiki to refresh my understanding of the word monopoly. Then I reached into the shallow recesses of my brain, and thought I had read somewhere that Exxon produced 3% of the worlds oil. New York Times? Not sure.
It is late and I have miles to go before I finish on this plum, so I will do this in steps, this being the first.
I think this will be a great site to register and blog on with stuff like this.
This comment could also be the last on this post, as I am an honest hypocrite (get it?), because if I remember or research something before the Super Bowl game tomorrow which reveals my faulty thinking, I will come back here and apologize for these flimsy, off the cuff thoughts.
In the mean time, I have to seriously consider if maybe Sam is only playing with one poly. mono poly.
In which case he may have confused Exxon with a rhombicosidodecahedron.

A well worn phrase and apprapo here, ‘corporations don’t pay taxes’. They pass them onto the consumer.
A second worn phrase but true, ‘profits are good’.
Comment by Sam Ervin Jret. on 3 February 2008:
Profits are good, but not if you re-invest them outside the biggest consumer nation in the world. They are also not so good if you don’t re-invest in your people and if you have something all we have in common here in the USA other than being citizens of the USA then I would say - PAY YOUR DAMN SHARE OF TAXES. We are not all of the same faith or all belong to the Knights of Columbus or all want the PATS to WIN TONIGHT but we are all Americans. It’s good for us all. I don’t stop paying for the schools because my kids graduated. I have an INTEREST (a word money people like) in n educated society, so I pay my taxes. Damn they’re due today too.

To plumer:
Nope I did not say they were a monopoly, I said it sounds like one. And upon close reading you can see I wrote it in response to EXXON’s own complaint, or rather it’s justification for such price gouging. Which they said was 1. many oil companies outside of the US are owned and controlled by the nations they are in, 2. because they had to did in such rough conditions, ie the EPA, other American countries would/could not go so boldly into these uncharted territories. I did almost cry for them if it makes you feel better? But doesn’t this discussion belong in a more public forum? You are not incorrect about the % but as my stats teacher used to say, “figures lie and….well you know the rest.” The point is EXXON MOBIL CORP. the biggest PUBLICALLY TRADED OIL CO. benefited from historic profits in a country that is reputed to BE AT WAR. Does WAR profiteer make you feel better than monopolist?
